I want this!

The first New Moon of 2021, the New Moon in Capricorn, arrives on January 13th, 2021, and is conjunct Pluto. This month’s new Moon relates to our soul’s growth and evolution, juxtaposed against a world in crisis.

Every New Moon is the beginning of a new Lunar Cycle. It indicates a fresh start, a breath of fresh air after what may feel like a time of stagnancy.

The January 2021 new moon in ambitious, earthy Capricorn makes many other planetary aspects as it transits, including two squares. The most powerful of these aspects is Mars square Saturn. This aspect can bring both frustration and inhibition, as well as unexpected impediments. It also connects with a Jupiter and Uranus square, inciting tension and sudden, erratic change.

These squares to the New Moon in Capricorn reveal a complex, intricate pattern of closely tied aspects to the continuing world crisis. We have an opportunity to review how we react to the events around us, how we manage the crisis and how we can open up opportunities for development. These are all great themes, and with Capricorn’s energy behind us to build the structures that we need to thrive. Despite this, we may struggle to adapt to any new realities that come our way.

Politically, we can already see these tensions revealing how the collective struggles to adapt to a change in thought, belief and more. While 2021 doesn’t have as many ups and downs as 2020 did, astrologically, there is a lot of change and opportunity to grow this year. Read on to learn more about how the New Moon in Capricorn 2021 will impact you and how you can work with the energies.

Understanding the Lunar Cycle

In the Lunar Cycle, each month features both a New and Full Moon. The New Moon is always in the sign of the current transiting Sun sign. The Full Moon in the sign opposite to the transiting Sun sign; this Capricorn season featured a Full Moon in Cancer and a New Moon in Capricorn.

During Aquarius season next month, we will experience both a Leo Full Moon and an Aquarius New Moon. Each New and Full Moon comes with different energies, different aspects and light up other areas of our charts. To make the most of each cycle, you must have a birth chart. Get yours here.

Each new Moon symbolizes the end of one cycle and the start of another, new 28-day period. When a New Moon occurs, it’s called a “Sun conjunct Moon.” It empowers us with a liveliness and a burst of energy and inspiration to take on new endeavours.

This is the best time to set projects and new undertakings in motion. I usually use the New Moon each month to set new goals, intentions, and hopes. I journal and write them out as I perform a new moon ritual, and then, six months later, when the full Moon in the same sign comes around, I revisit and check in on the things that I had begun.

It’s a beautiful way to see cycles, patterns and learn how to healthily look at old habits as you seek new and inventive ways to break free from what is no longer serving you.

New Moon in Capricorn 2021

Just like any new moon, the New Moon in Capricorn heralds the beginning of a new cycle. The Sagittarius New Moon cycle ends, and the Capricorn New Moon cycle enters, just as we start our new year.

The year’s first New Moon comes at 23 degrees of Capricorn, which throughout 2020 proved to be a very delicate degree in our universe. For example, it was at this degree in January last year that strict Saturn and extreme Pluto aligned. Here is when the realities of what 2020 had in store for us came to light. A year later, we meet a New Moon, full of new possibilities and growth, on the same degree.

The New Moon in Capricorn 2021 is a time during which we can focus on some of the productive traits of the sign of the earthy water goat: determined, purposeful, prudent, resourceful, ambitious, disciplined, wise, constant.

How can we positively incorporate these uniquely Capricorn qualities into our lives? How can we use this energy to find some clarity in a very messy world?

Earthy Energy, Ripe for Growth

Capricorn gives us the strength to focus on setting practical, tangible and attainable goals for our futures. The time is ideal for integrating the lessons learnt throughout last year’s astrological rollercoaster into our lives. While it could rouse memories or feelings of the past, this energy can inspire us to reflect and consider how far we have come through the last year.

This New Moon is the first opportunity we have to reflect on how we’ve matured, personally or collectively, and how contending with 2020’s ups and downs have transformed who we are and our priorities.

Despite the feeling of helplessness that the first week of January brought, this potent Capricorn energy can support us in bringing proper order in our lives. It’s a time to get some structure, structure to empower and grow your vision.

One of Capricorn’s greatest “lessons” that it imparts is acceptance. Acceptance of the idea that boundaries, rules and structure can bring true freedom to our lives and world. Order and structure brought on by Capricorn’s ruler, Saturn, can help us find respite from the chaos and worry that has been a dominant theme in our world. Through this New Moon, remember that setting attainable goals for ourselves will allow us to concentrate on what truly matters.

Not to scare you, this lunar cycle aligns with Pluto. Pluto can have some extreme effects on us, but when coupled with Saturn, we are set up for an ambitious, intense and focused period ahead of us. Set up a review cycle for the Capricorn Full Moon on June 24th to revisit the goals you’ve set. Here, you can see the growth you’ve made.
